The Caudan & Port Louis Waterfronts
Port Louis is the capital, thriving economic and commercial centre of Mauritius and its harbour is a hive of activity, situated beneath the battlement of mountains forming the Moka range in the north-west of the island. The busy, deep-water harbour and the increasingkly modern skyline reflect the island's sustained progress since independance in 1968. Founded by an energetic young French governor,
Bertrand Francois Mahe de Labourdonnais,
whose statue stands in the Place d'Armes
surveying the comings and goings of the harbour, the city is an appealing meld of history,
commerce and activity set among tropical greenery, climate and the refreshing influence of
the mountains and the sea.
The Waterfront is one of the island's most interesting day trips. With its
shops and food centres, including top-class restaurants as well as inexpensive snack
bars, the Waterfront is close to the
Central Market.
Vegetable and fruit stalls,
as well as the craft and textile stalls are a compulsory visit.
