MAHEBOURG

Named after Governor Mahe de Labourdonnais,
this town has a rich historical past,
located as it is around Grand Port bay where the Dutch
(the first inhabitants of the island) disembarked
before the French. Ancient capital harbour of Mauritius,
Mahebourg was the theatre of the famous Franco-British naval battle,
which took place in 1810 and
in which for the first and only time
the Napoleonic fleet defeated the British.
